BAP Core Competencies (CE) + Practicums

Enriched Training in the Foundational Skills of Brief Action Planning

14 hours of CE
September 2026 or November/December 2026

Mixed Methods:  8 hours online, self-directed (2 hours pre-work per practicum) + 4 (90 min) Live Zoom Practicums

Overview

This enriched experience includes eight hours of self-directed multi-modal online learning plus six hours of zoom enhanced practicums. Self-directed learning includes three high definition annotated video demonstration of skills, three online interactive quizzes with feedback for incorrect answers, and three real-world field exercises to practice and consolidate skills. Zoom practicums offer learners opportunities to practice BAP skills with feedback to reach criterion levels of competency for BAP Certification. After completing this online course with live Zoom practicums, learners qualify for Certification of BAP Competency by BAPPN.

MI Center for Change  

MI Center for Change is accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) to sponsor continuing education for psychologists and maintains responsibility for this program and its content.  Allied health professionals (e.g. nurses, OT, PT, addiction counselors) will receive certificates of completion, often accepted by professional boards for licensure requirements.

Self-Directed Course Objectives

  1. Define Brief Action Planning (BAP).
  2. List the 8 core competencies of BAP.
  3. Describe the four elements of the Spirit of MI and explain their importance for BAP.
  4. Describe each of the 5 elements of SMART planning.
  5. Explain when and how clinicians should add a Behavioral Menu to BAP.
  6. Explain when and how clinicians should add Problem-Solving to BAP.
  7. List the three important elements in BAP follow-up.
  8. Describe applications of BAP in routine clinical practice.

Live Zoom Practicum Objectives

  1. Use the two foundational BAP skills, with Spirit of MI, to elicit goals and make SMART action plans.
  2. Apply the three foundational BAP skills, with Spirit of MI, to reinforce action plans.
  3. Demonstrate integration of the three stepped-care skills of BAP, with Spirit of MI, into clinical care — the behavioral menu, problem-solving for low confidence, and follow-up.
  4. Describe and use GCQs (generative closed questions), with Spirit of MI, throughout BAP.
  5. Use the BAP Checklist to assess criterion-level performance of the 5 foundational BAP Core Competencies, consistent with the Spirit of Motivational Interviewing.
  6. Use the BAP Checklist to assess criterion-level performance of the 5 foundational BAP Core Competencies together with the 3 stepped-care competencies, with the Spirit of MI.
